Can you reuse the sludge at the bottom of the calcium hydroxide dosing bottle? PDF Print

After you have mixed up a calcium hydroxide solution for dosing, there will be a sludge left at the bottom. The sludge consists of excess calcium hydroxide that couldn't dissolve into the water, some calcium carbonate and a few other things present in the powder that is insoluble.

If you added more than enough calcium hydroxide powder to the bottle in the first place, then you can add more water, shake, settle and therefore reuse the sludge to generate another batch of solution. The number of times you do this depends on the excess calcium hydroxide that was added. For example, if twice the amount of powder was added to make the solution saturated, then you can use it twice. The third time there will be very little calcium dissolved into the water.
