What influence does magnesium have on calcium levels? |

Magnesium is the third most abundant ion in natural sea water behind chloride and sodium ( Natural Sea Water Composition). It acts as a "poison" for the crystallisation of calcium carbonate, therefore it slows the precipitation of calcium onto calcium carbonate surfaces. Therefore, if it is not at the correct level then there may be some issues with maintain sufficient calcium levels.
Magnesium needs to be maintained at approximately 1,300 ppm. If the levels are low then it is good practice to slowly raise the levels by approximately 100 ppm per day. A commercial additive can be used, but Espon Salt (available at supermarkets and pharmacies, Magnesium Additive) will do exactly the same job at significantly less cost.
