Cyano Cycle

Cyanobacteria are the most primitive organisms known to have a daily cycle of gene activity. Even without light, they continue to switch on genes for photosynthesis during the day.

Fish and Coral Feeder PDF Print

by Dr_DBW

Very simple to put together this project, even you untalented DIY types could do this one ;-) The airline joiner has to be glued into the end of the baster, either using an epoxy resin or some other type of strong glue. Have to make sure that the glue does not get onto the other end of the joiner, otherwise the airline will not seal onto it properly. You can glue the airline on to the other end of the joiner, but I left this free to come off, this way can use the baster to feed corals in the upper regions of the tank where it can reach.

Then cut a short length of airline off the end and attach it to the elbow, around 3-5 cm is good length. Attach the airline up the plastic rod using the cable ties, make sure they are not too tight, otherwise will cut off the airline hole. I then glued the airline elbow to the rod so that it does not rotate if it hits a rock or something in the tank. And that is about it, nice and simple.

1m x Plastic Rod
This bit was left over from a piece I used in the skimmer. It is actually used for windows or something, just saw it in the hardware store, and it was extactly what was needed.
4 x Cable Ties
These are to attach the airline to the plastic rod.
2m x Airline
Need a piece long enough to reach down the plastic rod and an extra piece so that can hold the baster in the other hand without difficultly.
1 x Airline Elbow
This is to go at the bottom end of the plastic rod so that can direct the water/food out of the airline in a horizontal direction.
1 x Airline Joiner
To attach the airline to the baster, as the outlet from the baster is too large to fit the airline over.
1 x Baster
Commonly called turkey basters in the US, but here they are just basters. Very handy tool these are too.

The construction and shape is shown in the following diagram:

I used this to feed my mandarin brine shrimp, just suck the shrimp up into it, then find the mandarin and slowly squirt the shrimp out. Also cut up seafood really fine and squirt it to any of the smaller polyped corals that cannot take larger pieces.
