Wavemaker
Wavemaker (the following is a documentation of what I HAD done and NOT what will work; please read it as a reference and make sure you have some basic electrical knowledge before attempting projects dealing with electricity. Don't blame me if you set anything on fire! :) )
I'll have to take some photos on this one...... Anyways, I made a DIY wavemaker using the readily available electronic timer kits (the ones for educational purposes). It cost about $10. Since it is already a 555 timer circuit, all I needed to do is change the potentiometer in it, add a plug, a cheap 12V power supply, and enclosure. The original pots made the ON/OFF cycle to be roughly at 5-10 seconds. Changing its value enabled the circuit to cycle at about 3-5 min. Total cost for the first one is about $20. Making two would probably cost about $30 total, since a larger enclosure cost about the same and will be able to house two units and the 12V power supply is shared.
The circuit had been running for 3 years 24/7. So I would say its pretty reliable.
There will be photos soon with specs on the pots that were used. Hopufully I'll get to it by next week (Aug 16, 2004)
