Fish Feeding
Feed enough to keep the entire fish looking solid, not just the stomach area. The stomach should definitely not be sunken.

Feeding Ring PDF Print

by Dr_DBW

If you happen to ever feed flake food, then you know that if you just sprinkle it on the water surface it will quickly head for the overflow before sinking and being eaten. The same can happen with frozen food as well. Although with frozen food you can thaw it before putting it in the tank, but wouldn't it be nice just to throw the food straight into the tank? Well, I was asking myself that same question and here is the simple solution.

You can purchase some commercially available feeding rings. Which are just a circle of plastic that floats, attached to a short rod and suction cup to hold in place. And this is based on that idea. The idea of the feeding ring is that food is held into place by the ring until it sinks. IN the case of flake food that is when it wets fully, and for frozen food that is when it thaws.

I have used a short length of ~50 mm acrylic tube, which fits snuggle between the end brace and the tank hood/end. Food is simply dropped into the tube and forgotten, without having to worry about if it heads for the overflow or not. My Sailfin Tang has even learnt how to assist the movement of food out of the feeder, by sticking his nose up within the tube, then swimming hard, sucking the food out ;-)
