Do I need a solenoid and pH controller with a calcium reactor? |

Short answer is, no you do not.
Longer answer is that it not needed for the normal function of a calcium reactor. They should be in operation 24/7, constantly adding alkalinity and calcium to the system and maintain stable levels.
A solenoid that stops and starts the flow of carbon dioxide gas interupts the operation. In doing so, it can mean the calcium reactor can spend a significant amount of time not operating correctly. Reason being it takes a significant amount of time for the calcium reactor to reach equilibrium conditions, start adding alkalinity and calcium to the system, at which point it may be shut off again. So the pH set point has be be at the right value, otherwise the calcium reactor wont do its job.
However, it can act as a safety feature if for some reason too much carbon dioxide is injected into the system, dropping the systems pH significantly. If you have the money to spare, wont hurt and it is just another gadget to have. But if you don't, far better off spending your money on something else far more important to the health of the reef aquarium.
