Upside-Down Jellyfish

Cassiopea sp. actually lives on the sea floor unlike other jellyfish. It lies on the sandy bottom and points its bushy arms directed upwards. They can easily be mistaken for an anemone.

Do I need to have a protein skimmer? PDF Print

No, you don't need to use a protein skimmer. However, they provide a very convenient and simple method of improving the water quality by providing an exporting mechanism, which is the important thing. This same exportation can also be provided by things like algae turf scrubbers, macro algae refugiums, activated carbon and water changes. So if an alternative exporting mechanism is being used then one isn't needed. Due to their simplicity and large capacity for improving water quality, for the average reef aquarium they are an indespencable piece of equipment.
