Do you vacuum a deep sand bed? PDF Print

No, for two reasons.

One is that it isn't required to do any vacuuming of the sand bed since the food and detritus that settles down into the sand bed will be processed by the various bacteria and fauna living there. That is one of the reasons that a deep sand bed is installed.

Second reason is that by vacuuming the sand bed you cause some major disruption to the community living there and the concentration gradients of various dissolved species through the sand bed. These disruptions will take the sand bed a significant amount of time to restablish and in the mean time may cause some problems to tank parameters.

If you really feel the need to vacuum it, only do a small fraction of the entire tank at a time and not too deeply. This will reduce the impact on the system. But the best option is to just leave it alone and let it do what they are actually there to do.
