Are mangroves an good export mechanism? |

Quick answer is no, they are not a great mechanism for the removal
of nutrients from the water in a marine aquarium. The reason for
this is that their growth rate is relatively slow, and when something
is growing it is taking up nutrients to fuel this growth.
However,
this doesn't rule out mangroves being a great addition to a marine
aquarium. They are a very interesting plant to have in the
system, add a further challenge, can look great, and provide another
different niche environment for organisms to live.
For the best plant / algae to use for exporting nutrients, then
you can't go past micro algae. Which are utilised in algae turf
scrubbers (ATS) because of their rapid growth rate. Next comes
macro algae, such as the various Caulerpa spp..
