Everyone has a different opinion, who do I listen to? |

Like most things, the reef keeping hobby has a large number of different ways of achieving. And pretty much every person will offer a different opinion on a subject. For someone just starting out this can be very daunting and overwhelming. It needs to be realised that there is no "right" way to do anything, with each technique being suitable within the constraints of what it is designed to do. For example metal halide lighting is more efficient when a high lighting intensity is required by the corals but will be overkill for a fish only aquarium. The best option is to firstly work out exactly what the goal of the reef aquarium is to be, in terms of the look, livestock, size, budget etc. Then each technique can be observed to see if it fits within these constraints. Also, take a look at what the person providing the advice can achieve in terms of their own reef aquarium utilising the technique and judge if that is what is being aimed for. Be wary of those that say their way is the right and only way to do things, plus take all advice with a grain of salt (including the information here).
