Why is my fish looking pale? PDF Print

Many people get a shock when they look into their tank without the lights on and discover that the colouring of their fish is very pale and washed out.! But this is entirely normal and not a reason to panic that something is wrong with their health.

Fish take on a different colouring at night, while they are sleeping, and it can be significantly paler than day time, almost white. This can be observed without undue stress on the fish by watching their colouring when the lighting comes on first thing in the morning. Within a few minutes of the lights coming on the fish will return to their normal colouring.

Most fish also change colouring based on their mood. Aggressive or scared fish can take on a more dark colouring than normal.

However, if the pale colouring persists for a significant lenght of time, then another cause needs to be looked for.
